General Guidelines
● Keep new articles consistent with the style of the rest of the Wiki.
While creativity is appreciated and encouraged, please do your best to not deviate too far from the established style of the Wiki. This is a standard expectation across most wikis. It can be a confusing experience for visitors to find themselves on a page that's structured very differently from most others they've seen, and we aim to provide a fairly cohesive experience here that feels accessible and easy to use/understand. Readers should be able to find things easily, and when similar content is reliably in the same place or looks similar enough, we can achieve that together!
● Keep things organised and readable on Wiki pages.
The length and structure of pages can affect how digestible they are for readers.
- If a section starts getting long, consider using a collapsible, reformatting information to fit into a table, or creating subpages to cut down on how much time and effort it takes to look around a page. Keep in mind that around half of ONX Wiki visitors are using a mobile device, and if your page is super long it can be difficult for mobile users to read!
- Consider the order and way information is presented, is the most important and broadly relevant stuff easily accessible? Is it first, followed by more detail? If not, that could help!
● Avoid removing content from Wiki pages unless you can verify that it's false or breaks Wiki rules.
We do our best to assume positive intent of all editors here on the ONX Wiki. If someone added content or information to a page, it's likely they thought it was important for some reason or another. Before jumping to removing something, try to rework it to fit better on the page/with Wiki style and do your best to figure out or ask the editor why they added it.
Media
● All fan art uploaded, linked to, or otherwise used on the ONX Wiki must be attributed to an artist.
Artist credit should the very least include a name but ideally have a link to the artist's social media or website.
- Please do your best to check with the artist beforehand if they'd like their work featured on the Wiki and how they'd like to be credited.
- If an artist wishes to remain anonymous, you may simply attribute the work as 'by an anonymous contributer' or 'by an anonymous artist'.
See examples of fan art crediting here.
● All AI-generated content uploaded, linked to, or otherwise used on the ONX Wiki must be tagged or otherwise described and disclosed as such.
For example: "this is an image description (AI-generated)".
- This includes images, video, audio, text, and any other content or media.
● AI-generated images must not be included in the 'Fan Art' section of galleries, or in an infobox.
They should not be the first thing readers see when they look at an article.
- AI-generated images may be used in addition to screenshots or art, but not in place of it.
- These images can appear in-line with text and other article content, or in non-fan art tabs of galleries. It is recommended to create a new gallery tab titled 'AI Images'.
● Make sure that UI elements and stream overlays are cropped out of images.
Images used on Wiki pages should not include any visible UI elements, like health bars and speech indicators, or stream overlays, like sub goals or branding, where at all avoidable.
- Exceptions can be made if they are specifically relevant to what the image is trying to illustrate, for example: a stray voice indicator can look a bit goofy on a character's main photo, but showing the contents of someone's inventory when relevant to a point you're talking about on a page is okay.
Infoboxes
● Do not list characters' actual names as their aliases.
Aliases are names that characters are also known as aside from their legal/full names, including nicknames, birth names, etc.
- Surnames are acceptable, if the character is commonly known just by their last name.
● Avoid having too many images in the infobox tabber gallery.
Tabbers don't display properly on mobile, and instead just show all the images side by side. This be cumbersome for users on mobile devices. Utilise a gallery at the bottom of the page instead, you don't need more than 2 or 3 images in your infobox, at the most!
● Do not list out-of-universe characters under 'characters played' in the infobox on character pages.
Character pages are in-universe: that is, they almost exclusively present information specifically regarding ONX alone. If you want to publish information about characters that players have portrayed on servers other than ONX, you can do so on a player page rather than a character page.
● Do not fill out infobox fields if they aren't relevant.
For example, if the character whose page you're editing doesn't have a criminal record, please don't put "N/A" or "None" or anything else in that field - leave it blank instead. There are two reasons for this:
- Infobox fields are used to automatically categorise pages, so filling out fields with irrelevant information can lead to false categorisation. For example: characters who have anything in the 'criminal record' field will be automatically be added to the 'criminals' category.
- Infoboxes can take up a lot of room on a page if every field is filled out, so keep it to relevant information only. Just leave fields blank if there isn't anything to add there!
● Include specific details in location fields
When describing a location in a field like 'place of birth', please don't neglect to specify all the relevant details in the order of most specific to least specific, just like you're addressing a letter. For example: "Austin, Texas, USA".
- This issue arises particularly often when describing a place in the United States, as some editors will neglect to include "USA". The ONX Wiki is frequented by readers from around the world, so we do need to specify and not assume that everyone will know that a state or town is in the US!
Other
● Use the Wiki's standard time and date formats.
The ONX Wiki uses the EST timezone and DD/MM/YYYY date format. Dates may also be written as words with the month first, for example: February 2nd, 2024.
● Do not add redundant notices to articles.
The ONX Wiki community decided as a collective that notices such as "please do not put false or unconfirmed information on this page" are not useful, given that nobody should be making bad contributions across the wiki as a whole. Please do not add these kinds of notices to pages, as they don't serve a function.
Content uploaded, linked to, or otherwise used on the ONX Wiki that does not adhere to the Style Guide will be edited, otherwise altered, or removed. When this happens, the Wiki Team will do our best to make contact with editors and give advice where we can.
If at any point you need help with following the style guide, or with anything else here on the ONX Wiki, you can visit the help page.
