You may come across many of these terms while browsing the ONX Wiki or watching ONX Roleplay content.


Abbreviations

IC

Short for 'In-Character'.

OOC

Short for 'Out-of-Character'.

Dev

Short for 'Developer'.

Peds

Short for 'Pedestrians'.

GTA / GTA V

Short for 'Grand Theft Auto' / 'Grand Theft Auto V'.

Desync

Short for 'Desynchronization'.

OOCG

Short for 'Out-of-Character Global'.


Roleplay Terminology

Character

A person or other being portrayed by a roleplayer. See a full list of characters on the ONX Wiki here.

Roleplay / Roleplaying

Acting in the role of a character; changing your usual behaviour to assume a new identity and act out the characteristics of a different persona. In the context of a group roleplaying situation: to collaboratively assume the roles of characters and create shared stories.

Roleplayer

A person who engages in roleplay.

In-Character

Used to describe anything that occurs within roleplay; the opposite of 'Out-of-Character' (OOC).

Out-of-Character

Used to describe anything that occurs outside of roleplay; the opposite of 'In-character' (IC).

Setting

The environment where roleplay characters exist; the world around roleplay characters.

Lore

An established set of knowledge or information about the setting for a roleplay environment; the history and agreed upon functions of the place where characters exist.

Meta

Information that players learn out-of-character[1].

Metagaming

When players use meta information in-character; when players who know things that their characters don't/shouldn't make choices based on this out-of-character knowledge.


OOC Server Terminology

Server

An online, multiplayer instance of a game; in this case, Grand Theft Auto V, via FiveM.

FiveM

A third-party framework that enables customized multiplayer servers for Grand Theft Auto V.

Whitelist

The list of users who have been granted access to the ONX FiveM server.

Whitelisted

Any user/s who have been added to the whitelist.

Developer

Skilled individuals who develop features and assets for a game or server.

Staff

Trusted individuals who help run the server or facilitate the experience of players on the server.

Queue

The line of people waiting for their turn to log into the server.

Server Restart / Reset

The daily shutdown and restart of the server. This occurs every 24 hours at 8am EST.

Desynchronization

When a player experiences things appearing differently to them than to most other players, such as when a vehicle or character looks to be in a different position to one player versus another.

Scuff

When something is a bit broken/janky or not working properly.

Out-of-Character Global

The server-wide in-game OOC chat, used for out-of-character communications like requests for admin assistance or clarifications of player intent.


IC Server Terminology

General Terms

"Tsunami / Storm / Radiation Storm"

Server reset.

"In My Head"

When a player character needs to be AFK or otherwise not active in-game for a short time. Sometimes also referred to with phrases like "I need to think about something" or "I'm gonna be deep in thought for a while", among other excuses that indicate a character's intense focus on a task or inattention to what's going on around themselves.

"Not In My Eyes"

When something looks different to one player compared to another. Often used when somebody is experiencing desync.

"Look Through Your Eyes"

When requesting a player to switch to first-person.

"Muscle"

"Flex your _ muscle." Refers to an input from a keyboard, mouse, or other peripheral. This is used to teach other players how to do certain things like open a menu or access a feature in-game without breaking character too much.

"Kiki Face"

When a player character's face has reverted to default due to scuff.

"Take A Nap"

Briefly logging off and back on in an attempt to fix glitches or scuff.

"Spider"

"You have a spider on you." When someone's character model is not animating properly and requires the player to jump or ragdoll or initiate another animation to reset the model.

Professional Terms

MDW

Mobile Data Workstation; a tablet equipped with software for creating and reading reports, accessing documents such as legislation, creating and reading citizen profiles, documenting licenses issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, etc.


Gaming Terminology

Gameplay

How a game is played; the features and experience of playing or interacting with a game.

Player

Anyone who plays or interacts with a game. See a full list of players on ONX here.

Sandbox

A gaming environment that enables a great degree of creativity and freedom without many restrictions or predetermined goals.

Develop

The act of creating features, assets, code, etc. for a game or server.

Vanilla

The base game itself, or its features, as they exist in their natural state with no modifications, additions, or third-party customisation.

Pedestrians

Models for non-playable characters[2]. In FiveM servers, these assets are used and modified for player characters.

AFK

'Away From Keyboard'; not at your computer, and therefore not actively available in-game.

First-Person

When a player views the action as though through the eyes of the character they are controlling.


Wiki Terminology

Editor

  1. A person who edits the wiki.
  2. The user interface which enables editing content on the wiki.

Article

A page on a wiki that provides information on the subjects of the wiki.

Source

Code; programming instructions.

Infobox

A design element that can be used in an article which provides concise pieces of information about the subject of the page.

Template

A type of non-article page that provides a quick and easy way for the same source to be used across multiple pages.

Category

A collation of pages that have been defined as belonging to the same group.
