Background Information[]
Giovanni Delucci, also known as "The Sandman," born in 1969, is a man with a storied past and a distinctive presence. With his signature gray hair and a notable accent, Giovanni spent a significant part of his life entrenched in the world of organized crime. Hailing from Catania, Italy, he was born into a family affiliated with a Sicilian Mafia gang from Passo di Rigano.
Growing up amidst the complexities of Mafia life, Giovanni had two brothers: Guiseppe, who distanced himself from criminal activities, and Donald "Gooey" Delucci, a part of the Cuzzomani crime family as a small-time racketeer. His parents, Tommaso Delucci and Felice Tagliano, were Italian immigrants who brought Giovanni to the United States in 1971 as a stowaway on the SS Vincenzo Florio, joining his cousins, the Taglianos, in New York City.
In his early years in the States, Giovanni worked at a small delicatessen owned by his uncle's family, learning valuable life lessons from his family's unique way of navigating the world. Despite the challenges of assimilation in the 1970s, Giovanni carved his path by establishing a lucrative fight pit, collecting bets, and engaging in various activities to make a comfortable living.
His journey took a darker turn in 1981 when, amidst the Grenada War, Giovanni's attempts to avoid the draft proved unsuccessful. Serving overseas, he returned in 1982, having endured the rigors of war and developing skills that would prove useful later in life.
Reuniting with his brother Gooey, Giovanni was introduced to Mario Cuzzomani, the boss of the Cuzzomani Andrangeteh, and Cuzzy Sartori, the underboss. Their connection paved the way for Giovanni to become a known enforcer for the Cuzzomani Family by 1987.
In 1990, Giovanni's life took a tragic turn when he got involved in a fatal altercation with a construction worker. This incident earned him the infamous moniker "The Sandman." Despite living happily with his then-girlfriend Kayleigh and her daughter Abby, Giovanni faced the consequences in 1999 when he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years for the murder of a construction union boss.
During his time in prison, Giovanni underwent a transformative journey, distancing himself from his criminal past. Making friends from diverse backgrounds, he assembled a crew and prepared for his eventual release. Now, as a free man in the present day, Giovanni has reformed, leaving behind the shadows of his past. With a desire for redemption and a determination to live a different life, he steps into a new chapter, guided by the lessons learned from a life once mired in crime but now seeking a path of redemption and reform.
Delucci was born in Catania, Italy, on July 24, 1969, to a family that belonged to a Sicilian Mafia gang from Passo di Rigano. He had two brothers, Guiseppe Delucci, who was not involved with the Mafia, and Donald "Gooey" Delucci, who was a part of the Cuzzomani crime family as a small-time racketeer. His parents were Italian immigrants, Tommaso Delucci and Felice Tagliano. Delucci entered the United States on December 23, 1971, at Norfolk, Virginia, as a stowaway on the SS Vincenzo Florio. He then joined his cousins, the Taglianos, in New York City. He had worked for a small delicatessen owned by his uncle's family. With his family and their very special way of learning, he leant how to act cordual and fair. but at the same time very cool and smart. The 1970s were not easy. Growing up in the states was different for Gio; he had a hard time getting involved with the local activities. He started a fight pit and made a lot of money by collecting bets and taking percentages of them. One day, he was approached to work security at this place called "TATAGLIA CLUB AND CASINO." At this point he was still working at the family deli, making a comfortable amount of money with his antics. Now, in 1981, in the midst of the Grenada War, Gio's attempts to dodge the draught fell on deaf ears, and before he knew it, his beautiful hair was chopped, and he was neck deep in mud and blood overseas. He learned many skills in Nam that would come in handy later on.
After a few years, he is sent home in 1982 because Grenada had fallen and he is no longer needed for war. After returning home, he is reunited with his brother, Gooey, who was waiting for him at the train station. He takes Gio and his belongings to his small condo in uptown Brooklyn, where he introduces Gio to Mario Cuzzomani (the boss of the Cuzzomani Andrangeteh) and Cuzzy Sartori (his underboss)… the three get along like they've known each other for years. Just like that, Gio became very close friends with some of the most powerful people in New York. Time flew by, and now it is 1987, and Gio is a known enforcer for the Cuzzomani Family. One spring day in 1990, Gio got involved in a scuffle with a construction worker who didn't want to pay union fees. As one thing led to another, Gio put a sandblaster in the guy's eye and killed him. From that day on, he was known as "The Sandman." Gio lived happily with his then-girlfriend Kayleigh and her older daughter Abby. But all good things must come to an end. In 1999, Gio was arrested for the murder of a construction union boss (yes, the one from earlier) and sentenced to 25 years in a maximum security facility. During his stay in college, he loses contact with his family, and his "other family" tries to have him killed in prison because they think he will rat them out to lighten his own sentence. Many times while in the can, he had made new friends of many creeds colors and religion, he assembled his own crew and prepped for his release. One after another they got released, and got things ready for his release. Now in the present day, 25 years later, Gio is a free man and has decided to head on to new voyages in a new land, and who doesn't like the beach (and the tickets to Florida were all booked)?
